Who We Are
AuroraMap was developed by researchers in Applied Physics to solve a simple problem: to show users the aurora, and let them understand their chances of witnessing them. Most aurora apps are either too simple (giving you a vague "yes/no") or too complex (dumping raw data without context).
We believe that understanding the physics behind the aurora—solar wind speed, magnetic field orientation (Bz), and particle density—is key to successfully witnessing it. This platform translates those complex statistical mechanics into a clear, visual forecast that helps you decide when to step outside.
Our Methodology
We don't just guess. AuroraMap aggregates real-time data from the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite and applies the OVATION Prime model to predict the auroral oval's intensity.
Solar Wind Analysis
We track the speed and density of solar particles 1 million miles from Earth to give you a 15-60 minute warning before they hit our atmosphere.
Magnetic Field (Bz)
We monitor the Interplanetary Magnetic Field. When the Bz component tilts South (negative), we alert you that the "door is open" for auroral energy.
Cloud Cover
A strong storm is useless if you can't see it. We integrate local weather models to ensure you don't drive hours into a cloud bank.
The Privacy Promise
In an age where every app wants to track your location history, we take a different approach. The night sky belongs to everyone, but your data belongs to you.
- No GPS Tracking: We use your location only when you click "Locate Me" to check the forecast, and it is never stored on our servers.
- No User Profiles: You don't need to create an account to use the map.
- Transparent Code: We believe in open science and transparent tools.
Data Sources & Credits
Our forecasts are powered by the incredible public work of scientific institutions:
- NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC): Primary real-time data source.
- DSCOVR Satellite Mission: Solar wind telemetry.
- OpenStreetMap & CesiumJS: Mapping and 3D visualization technologies.
